FROM LAUGHTER TO LAP TIMES– GUGULETHU'S ELDERLY SPORTS DAY STEALS THE SHOW WITH OCTOTEL..

There’s something magical about the Gugulethu Township — the music, the people, the energy. And on this particular day, it all came together in one heartwarming celebration of life, laughter, and movement at the Gugulethu Older Persons Forum Sports Day.

Seniors from all over Athlone, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, and Heideveld laced up their sneakers, put on their brightest smiles (and even brighter t-shirts), and showed Mzansi what real spirit looks like!

UBUNTU IN ACTION

The Gugulethu Older Persons Forum started this event to give the elderly a space to connect, move, and feel celebrated. And wow, did it deliver!

As one of the participants, Nombolelo Msizi, put it perfectly:

“Events like this are something we need. It’s important for all of us to mingle, stay active, and be occupied. It makes us feel like we belong.”

Belonging — that’s what it was all about. You could feel it in every handshake, every cheer, and every shared laugh.

The Gugulethu elders came together for much cheer and community comeraderie.

OCTOTEL SHOWS UP WITH GEES!

We were proud to roll up with full-on community gees! As one of the main sponsors, we made sure the day had everything it needed — from colourful banners and t-shirts to cool refreshments and a team cheering louder than anyone else.

Nandipha Ntshoza from the Gugulethu Older Persons Forum shared,

“We struggled to get sponsors, but through the Gugulethu Sports Council we were blessed to have Octotel. Because of them, we can have days like this — with t-shirts, banners, and everything that makes it special. We are thankful.”

The gratitude went both ways. Because for us, being there wasn’t just about sponsorship — it was about being part of the joy, the laughter, and the magic that makes Gugulethu what it is.

Octotel showed up bringing their infamous gees, sponsering the branding and refreshments.

THE DAY THE FIELD TURNED INTO A FESTIVAL

From the moment the first whistle blew at the Gugulethu Sports & Recreation Centre, the field was buzzing. There was music, there was dancing, there was cheering — and there were aunties and uncles giving it their all in races, games, and team challenges.

The laughter was contagious. The joy? Unstoppable.

When one gogo sprinted through the 400m run like a champion, the crowd erupted! Some even ran alongside the field, waving and shouting encouragement. And in true Gugulethu style, a few couldn’t resist breaking into spontaneous dance moves right there on the sidelines.

This wasn’t just a sports day — it was a reminder that age is just a number, and joy never retires.

The Gugulethu elderly took part in many physical activities during the day.

THE REAL CONNECTION, THE OCTOTEL WAY.

Sure, we’re all about connecting communities — but days like this remind us that real connection isn’t just about cables. It’s about people. It’s in the singing, the high-fives, and the shared cups of juice after a race well run.

Kayla Abrahams, our Activations Team Lead, summed it up beautifully:

“True connection goes beyond fibre. It’s about being part of the communities we serve. It’s events like this where real connection is felt.”

And honestly — she’s right. Because in Gugulethu, that connection was felt in every laugh, every dance, and every proud smile.

This is the true connection that goes beyond fibre.

A HEART FULL OF THANKS.

To the elders who ran, danced, and laughed their way through the day — we salute you. Your energy was everything.

At Octotel, we believe our seniors are the heart of our communities — living proof that joy, movement, and togetherness never go out of style.

So here’s to the Gugulethu Older Persons Forum Sports Day — a celebration of life, love, and laughter. And here’s to many more days of connection, the Octotel way — full of real people, real gees, and real heart.
